Joba Chamberlain suffers yet another setback

In 2007, it was good being Joba Chamberlain. He was the brought up from the minor leagues and broke out as the Yankees new star reliever. He had great velocity and was striking out opponents left and right. Then the bug game happened. Game 2 of the 2007 ALDS against the Cleveland Indian, Chamberlain came in from the bullpen and was swarmed on the mound by bugs. The bugs infected him and he’s never been the same.

Kidding, of course, all though that would be a good story. That game really has no significance except that Chamberlain has been on a downward spiral ever since then.  What did contribute to Chamberlains struggles though, is the mismanagement of him in the Yankees rotation. I’m confident that it contributed to his rotator cuff injury in 2009 and him needing Tommy John surgery this past season. You simply can’t do that to a pitcher.

Expectations were set high after that 2007 season and Chamberlain has failed to impress. Besides his mediocre performance on the field and his injuries, Chamberlain also was arrested for DUI in 2008. In other words, it’s been a struggle for Chamberlain.

Things were looking up though, and he was coming off the Tommy John surgery and ready to pitch this year. Then today news came out that Chamberlain dislocated his ankle and would need surgery. He dislocated his ankle playing on a trampoline with his son.

It’s dissapointing to see him have yet another setback and yet again Yankees fans are waiting for this guy to show the potential that they saw from him in 2007.

  1. I don’t know if you saw this but,it’s been reported by the New York Daily news that he bled so much after the trampoline fall that for a while it looked like he might lose his foot! He is not expected back this season and frankly, this could be a career changing injury.
    What a shame!

    Nice post!

Wow no I didn’t see that. Who knew you could get hurt so much playing on a trampoline haha. And I think that this combined with the other injuries he’s had are gonna make it hard for Joba to ever return to his ’07 self.
