Ranking the XXL Freshman classes

Last month, the people over at XXL released their XXL 2012 Freshman class. For those unfamiliar, the Freshman class is a yearly list that promotes the new, up and coming rappers of the year. The people at XXL gave the fans the vote this year, and they awarded us with possibly the worst list we’ve ever seen. XXL has been doing this since 2008, and while there’s always some busts this year it’s full of them.

The 2012 XXL Freshman class released Cyphers yesterday, and in honor of that I decided to look back and rank the classes.

Worst Class: 2012

I know it may seem like I’m piling on this class right now, but we’ll get into the good one’s after this. One reason I also don’t like this list is because of all the people they left off. Up for voting was Jon Connor, XV, Los, Sam Adams and hell I’d take Chris Webby over who they chose. If this class had at least Connor, XV and Los than it would immediately be moved up this list. Instead, we’re left with Future, Kid Ink, Danny Brown, Macklemore, Don Trip, French Montana, Machine Gun Kelly, Hopspin, Roscoe Dash and Iggy Azeala. Yawn.

4th: 2008

This is the 2nd worst or 4th best. However you want to look at it. Anyway, it may be the easiest to look back at the 2008 class and call it bad because we’ve had a chance to see these guys develop more than some of the more recent classes. And besides Lupe Fiasco, I’m not impressed with any of them. The rest of the 2008 class is Crooked I, Gorilla Zoe, Plies, Papoose, Lil’ Boosie, Young Dro, Rich Boy, Saigon and Joell Ortiz. Okay, I’ll give you a minute to say “Oh, I remember him”. You done? Ok, besides Saigon’s appearance on Entourage and Lupe Fiasco being great, the 2008 is extremely average.

3rd: 2011

I like the 2011 class. The top three classes here were rough and I really think I could go with any of them. Even though it’s only been a year, the 2011 class is stacked with talent. Mac Miller, Kendrick Lamar and Diggy Simmons are my favorites from the 2011 class but the 2011 class also has Meek Mill, Big K.R.I.T and Yelawolf. Maybe all of these guys coming out in 2011 is why the 2012 class was so bad. The whole 2011 class included Meek Mill, Big K.R.I.T, Cyhi the Prince, Lil Twist, Yelawolf, Mac Miller, YG, Lil B, Kendrick Lamar, Diggy Simmons and Fred tha Godson

2nd: 2009

Like I said with the 2011 class, these top three are all pretty close. The 2009 has many recognizable names such as B.o.B, Kid CuDi, Wale, Asher Roth and Charles Hamilton. Although some of them have had more success than others, most rap fans know B.o.B, CuDi and Wale with a lot more knowing the work of Asher Roth and Charles Hamilton. I love this class and if Charles Hamilton or Asher Roth had done more recently they would probably be on top. But for now, they have to settle for 2nd. The whole 2009 XXL Freshman class was B.o.B, Kid CuDi, Wale, Asher Roth, Charles Hamilton, Blu, Ace Hood, Corey Gunz, Currensy and Mickey Factz.

1st: 2010

The 2009 XXL class is probably deeper all around than this class, but the top of the 2010 class is hard to compete with. J.Cole, Wiz Khalifa and Big Sean were all  apart of the 2010 class and it’s hard to argue with the success that they’ve had. Cole is better than anyone who has come from the 2009 class and Wiz has probably had more success than any of them. Pair that with the up and coming success of Big Sean and that’s what put the 2010 class on top. The whole 2010 Freshman class was J.Cole, Wiz Khalifa, Big Sean, Pill, Nipsey Hussle, OJ da Juiceman, Freddie Gibbs, Jay Rock, Fashawn and Donnis.

1st: 2009 – Even though B.o.B went on to be a lame sellout, Blu is easily the dopest rapper ever to be on a freshman cover
2nd: 2008 – woulda been first if not for lupe selling out.
