Roger Goodell strikes again

When Roger Goodell handed down suspensions on the Saints coaches over a month ago, we knew player suspensions were coming. Today, Goodell struck again.

The NFL announced that Saints LB Jonathan Vilma was suspended for the whole season, defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove(now on the Packers) suspended eight games, defensive end Will Smith was suspended for 4 games and linebacker Scott Fujita(now with the Browns) for 3 games.

When Goodell suspended Saints coach Sean Payton and Gregg Williams, I said that the suspensions were way too severe. Today, I hold the same opinion.

I don’t have a problem with the suspensions of Hargrove, Smith and Fujita. They deserve to be suspended for their role. Like the case with the coaches though, Goodell went too far with his suspension of Vilma.

I feel like I’m repeating myself, but Goodell is puffing out his chest again with these suspensions. Obviously the Saints bounty program was wrong but to suspend Vilma for the whole season was too much and once again an abuse of power. It’s no surprise with this coming from Goodell. His term as NFL commish has been marked by his suspensions.

The real question though, is has this improved player conduct in the NFL? Of course we’ll have to wait and see, but I doubt it will.
