Who should the Knicks keep in the offseason?

Well, now that the Knicks have finished another disappointing season it’s time to look towards the future with them. They have three huge contracts with Carmelo, Amare and Tyson Chandler locked up for a while but they still do have some key free agents this offseason. They are still a team that clearly needs some more help, and this free agency could be very important.

The Knicks have two free agents at the point guard this offseason in Jeremy Lin and Baron Davis. Obviously we all know that Lin is coming back after his Linderella season(the puns will never stop). Unlike some of the journalists and sports talking heads though, I’m not completley sold on Jeremy Lin yet. I’m 99% sure he’s coming back though and my opinion on his return rides on how much money they give him. Hopefully the Knicks don’t do the thing we all know the Knicks for doing, which would be overpaying. Baron Davis, on the other hand, I wouldn’t expect to come back. He’s getting real old and battled injuries. The Knicks tried the Baron Davis experiment and it didn’t work out really, so I wouldn’t bring him back if I were the Knicks. Also, they may need room for a Nash-Lin point guard combo which is unlikely but has been hinted at by Amare.

The Knicks also have two more guards hitting the free agent market this season. Their first round draft pick from 2010, Landry Fields, hits the free agent market this offseason. I would expect Iman Shumpert to be the Knicks starting 2 guard next year but Fields would be a great backup if they can bring him back for a smaller contract. JR Smith, on the other hand, has to go. While he was one of the only Knicks in the playoffs who could create his own shots, he created a little bit too many of them. Whether JR Smith is shooting good or bad, he never stops shooting. He was an interesting experiment, but the Knicks need to let him walk. They don’t need him nor do I think they could afford him this offseason. Besides, JR is getting a little hurt by the Knicks fans. It’s okay, some people just can’t cut it in the big city JR.

While the Knicks do have 4 more guys on the free agent market, only two of them really matter. Sorry Bill Walker and Dan Gadzuric. One of the players that is hitting the free agent market is Steve Novak. While he had the best 3 point shooting percentage during the season, he was horrific in the playoffs only taking nine shots and making it painfully obvious that he can’t do anything BESIDES shoot three’s. Which isn’t all that bad, because he’s very good at doing that. I don’t think Steve Novak will be too hard to bring back, so if the Knicks can do it than bringing Novak back will be a good move because with him you know you have somebody who is hitting the three for a great percentage. Their final free agent worth talking about is someone that a lot of people who aren’t Knicks fans may not know. Jared Jeffries signed with the Knicks in 2011 and is their only reliable backup behind Tyson Chandler. Besides Chandler, Jeffries is one of the best defenders that the Knicks have. He’ll be pretty cheap too, so if I was the Knicks I would try and keep Jeffries.

With these people hitting free agency, the Knicks have a lot of work to do with not too much money to work with. The Knicks need to get to work though if they want to be taken seriously among the best teams in the league.
