Album Review: Life is Good by Nas

Throughout his career, Nas has been in the spotlight for various reasons. His feud with Jay Z, political statements and above else the music that he’s been putting out. With him putting out one of the best, if not the best album of all time in “Illmatic” everything that Nas puts out is expected to be good.

“Life is Good” did not disappoint.

The title of the album brings forth a concept that is shared throughout the whole album by Nas. Nas takes the problems that he has faced in the past and puts them into a positivity going forward. In fact, Nas said that in an interview the green dress he’s holding on the cover is from his ex-wife Kelis and it’s the only thing she left in the house.

The album starts with “No Introduction”, which does a good job of ironically introducing the album. Nas brings forth his best raps on this song and the whole album, but we see a soft side of Nas on the 5th track “Daughters”. He raps about the troubles and times he’s shared with is own daughter. The Mary J. Blige feature on the next track “Reach Out” isn’t that great, but the track after “Worlds An Addiction” with Anthony Hamilton may be one of the best tracks on the album. Even though this album takes a good attitude towards life, this track outlines some of the things that are wrong with our world.

Next up is “Summer on Smash” with Swizz Beatz and Miguel. It sounds promising, but the song is disappointing. After that though, the album gets back to Nas at the top of his game.

The first single from the album, “The Don” comes up a couple of songs later. Even though it’s been out for a couple of months now though, it still is as good as ever. The last two tracks on the album “Cherry Wine” with Amy Winehouse and “Bye Baby” end the album and end it on a high note. Both are great songs and it’s great to hear another Nas and Winehouse collaboration, because they worked well together.

“Life is Good” is Nas’ way of saying he’s okay with everything that happened in his life. He’s had his good and bad moments and for the most part we’ve seen them all. Nas has come to grips with everything in his life though, and let’s us know that his “Life is Good”. An candidate for the best album of the year, this album also is good.

Best Song: Daughters
Album Rating: 4.25 out of 5

Julys been a good month for Hip Hop, Nas is sounding better than ever. Life is Good is just a great testament to him as an artist & rapper.

        Azealia Banks – Fantasea
Cyhi the Prynce – Ivy League
50 – 5 (murder in numbers) < meh it was valid effort
        Nas Life is Good.
Oh & Frank Ocean if we're not confining the term to just rap.
