Mixtape Review: On the House by Slaughterhouse

Ever since Kanye West and Jay Z released “Watch the Throne” last year, there’s been plenty of rappers who have been working on projects with other rappers. While there isn’t many rap groups in today’s rap game, these rap duos have become something to get used to. While there may not be many rap groups though, there is one out there that makes headlines and good music.

That group is Slaughterhouse. Slaughterhouse is made up of rappers Royce da 5’9, Crooked I, Joe Budden and Joell Ortiz. They’ve been making music since 2008 and next week they’re releasing their second album, “Welcome to: our house”. Before that album comes though, they decided to drop a mixtape, “On the House”(quick side note. Love the name).

For a group that’s signed to Shady Records, the music that they make fits in perfectly with what Eminem and a lot of the people on the record makes. The mixtape has plenty of highlights, like “Coming Home” and “Truth or Truth Pt. 1”. At times, the mixtape switches from just raps that work on wordplay into real raps about the life that these different rappers have gone through. And they do both of those things very well.

My biggest problem with the mixtape is that a lot of it sounds the same to me. It’s a lot of similar beats and at times the lyrics can sound like the same thing over again. Like I said though, they do it well. They do touch on some popular beats like the beat from Nas’ song “The Don”, off of his album “Life is Good”.

“On the House” is a good mixtape and it has me looking forward to listening to the album next week. It isn’t great though. Just a good, well made mixtape.

Mixtape Rating: 3 out of 5

Best Song: Truth or Truth Pt 1
